Gastric and Duodenal Ulcers:

Most ulcers present with abdominal pain, burning epigastric sensation that is relieved by food but recurs, usual presentation of gastric ulcers. Complications are perforation, severe hemorrhage and gastroduodenal obstruction.

Gastritis:

  • Acute: Can be due to stress, irritating agents, alcohol and aspirin. (Acute hemorrhage gastritis)
  • Crónica (Atrófica): Helicobacter pylori, asociado con riesgo de cáncer gástrico.

Gastric and Duodenal Tumors:

Gastric tumors are malignant in 95% of cases. Symptoms include pain, weight loss, anorexia. Diagnosis is made by upper endoscopy and biopsy. Surgical treatment depends on its localization in the stomach. Partial or total resection of stomach can be performed. Benign gastric tumors are less frequent such as leiomyomas, fibromas and angiomas. Malignant tumors of the duodenum are adenocarcinoma of ampulla of Vater (Ampulloma). Treatment of resectable lesions is pancreatoduodenectomy (Whipple´s procedure). Benign tumors include adenomas, lipomas which can be excised.
